Zingiberaceae are usually large and often aromatic rhizomatous herbs with two-ranked, ligulate leaves that have open sheaths; an inflorescence that is frequently branched; and pedicellate, monosymmetric flowers with a single stamen, the style running between the two halves of . Herbs perennial, terrestrial, rarely epiphytic, aromatic, with fleshy, tuberous or non-tuberous rhizomes, often with tuber-bearing roots. Stems usually short, replaced by pseudostems formed by leaf sheaths.
